I first came across Ryan Star’s “The America EP” six years ago when it was offered as a free download on his website. Today’s song, “America,” is a song about the resilience of the American people and the way we come together in the aftermath of both natural and man-made disasters. Since last week, when news broke of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, I’ve found myself coming back to this song as I try to process this tragic event. My heart is broken that more innocent lives have been cut short in yet another school shooting. In the wake of this tragedy, I can’t help but be proud of the survivors who are speaking out, sharing their stories, and using their voices to enact change. May we never become desensitized to senseless violence.
