This week’s tune comes from the Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers. “Scott Street” can be heard on her debut album, Stranger in the Alps, released on September 22nd.
Like much of Stranger, “Scott Street” tackles the theme of loneliness. It perfectly encapsulates the disconnect and isolation you feel when reconnecting with someone you were once close to and realizing how much they (or both of you) have changed. As you make small talk, you realize the shared interests that brought you together as friends or lovers no longer exist.
The song ends with the line: “Anyway, don’t be a stranger.” It’s Bridgers’ way of saying, “We should catch up soon!” or “Let’s get coffee sometime.” It’s more often a polite parting phrase than a serious suggestion. You’ll go your separate ways and never text each other or meet for that cup coffee. You’ll eventually run into another high school classmate, and the cycle repeats.
