Tuesday Tunes – “Heart Is A Drum” by Beck

Whether or not you watched the Grammys on Sunday, if you’ve visited any social media websites since then, you’ve probably read about Beck Hansen’s Morning Phase earning three Grammys for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical), Best Rock Album, and Album of the Year. You may have also seen celebrities’ reactions to his Album of the Year win or heard Kanye West’s comments about Beck “disrespecting artistry” – comments I find rather nonsensical and ironic.

Opinionated rants and Tumblr GIFs aside, Beck’s Album of the Year win came as a pleasant surprise. Sunday marked my first time watching the Grammys in nine years or so (for… reasons) and it was great to see a deserving artist get some recognition. Morning Phase is a beautiful, well-produced album that has earned numerous listens from me since its release, and in honor of its wins, I’ve chosen “Heart Is A Drum” and its mysterious music video for this week. Congratulations to Beck and his team on their rightfully earned Grammy awards.

“High as the light of day / Falling down across your lost highway / Pain – does it hurt this way / To come so far to find they’ve closed the gates? / You’ve lost your tongue when you fall from the pendulum / Your heart is a drum keeping time with everyone.”
